[ARCHIVED] Second week of summer reading highlights science and community

Mad Science

(STILLWATER, OKLAHOMA / June 7, 2023) – The Stillwater Public Library moves into its second week of summer reading with programs full of science, community care and fun for all. Children’s programs and family movies take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with two showings each day at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Teen programs are at 2 p.m. on Wednesdays.

On Tuesday, June 13, kids are invited to see Mad Science’s action-packed performance focused on STEM learning. In keeping with this summer’s theme of “all together now,” the program features a diverse, fun-filled reimaging from some of the greatest scientific team-ups of all times, because some of the greatest discoveries are a result of working together.

Please note that library staff will enforce the auditorium's room capacity ensure everyone’s safety. If capacity is reached signs will be placed at the library entrances.

According to Elizabeth Murray, children’s librarian, science programs are always a big draw.

“Kids and parents enjoy science shows,” Murray said. “Everyone learns something new, and they go home excited to try out at-home science experiments.”

Then on Wednesday, June 14, teens in grades 6-12 will meet at the library for a quick presentation by Chris Franks, the City of Stillwater’s environmental programs manager, before walking to Southern Woods Park. At the park teens will pick up trash so it will look nice for the City-wide Juneteenth Celebration on Saturday. Teens who attend will receive iIce pops and water. There will also be a drawing for a small prize donated by GameStop or a book at the end of the program.

Jordan Stine, teen librarian, thinks that having a park clean-up is an excellent way for teens to learn about kindness towards nature and their community.

“It’s a wonderful privilege to live in a place with so many lovely parks,” Stine said. “Summer in Stillwater is a time when the community spends a lot of time using our parks, so it is important to keep them nice and clean for everyone to enjoy.”

The fun continues on Thursday, June 15 with a children’s film. The storyline follows a forest tribe of cotton-candy-color-haired trolls that work to rescue their friends from the royal chef of King Gristle. The film is rated PG and runs approximately 92 minutes. Free popcorn will be available at the showing. Please bring a water bottle for water refills.

The library will be closed on Monday, June 19, in observance of Juneteenth, but librarians will be taking part in the celebrations at Southern Woods Park on Saturday, June 17, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. providing buttons and a fun activity.
