Artists and comic book fans in grades 5-12 are invited to a free comic book workshop on Saturday, May 10, from 1 to 3 p.m., at Prairie Arts Center. Attendees will learn how to draw comic book characters and start making their own comic book. Registration is required to attend, as there are limited spaces and supplies available.
Teens will participate in lessons designed to teach drawing techniques and tips that help with the creation process. All art styles are welcome, and teens will be encouraged to be creative and explore their interests.
Teen Librarian Jordan Stine wanted to find a way to involve teens in Free Comic Day, which officially takes place on May 3.
“Even though we’re having the program the week after Free Comic Book Day, teens who attend the workshop will still receive a free comic book courtesy of Legendary Comics,” Stine said. “We’re fortunate to have local businesses that help us encourage reading. Incentives like these can really make a difference to some teens.”
Stine adds that comics can be a good way to engage reluctant readers.
“Comics and graphic novels bring visual art and writing together in a way that is fun and accessible,” Stine said. “They aren’t just about superheroes anymore. You can find nonfiction, sci-fi, mystery and pretty much any genre one can think of.”
