The Stillwater Public Library is hosting “Tech Time,” a free drop-in session where individuals may get assistance using free library services or ask basic questions about using their computer, tablet, e-reader or smartphone. “Tech Time” will take place on Wednesday, Jan. 14, from 4-6 p.m.
During the first 20 minutes, librarians will give a brief overview of some of the library’s free digital services, including Libby (for e-books, e-audiobooks and digital magazines), NewsBank (digital newspapers), Brainfuse (online live tutoring, resume writing and job search help), EBSCO (online articles and journals) and Past Perfect (for searching the library’s archives).
Attendees will then have the opportunity for a 15-minute appointment with a librarian to receive assistance with any of the library’s digital services or to seek help with navigating personal device issues. Several librarians will be on hand, and patrons will get assistance on a first-come, first-served basis.
Adult services librarian Christina Elliott hopes that this drop-in program will make it easy for people to get started using the library’s digital services.
“We provide so many great resources that patrons can access online, but many people don’t know where to start,” Elliott said. “Plus, a lot of people get new devices after the holidays and need some assistance just getting things set up. We’re here to help!”
Attendees should bring their laptop, tablet or smartphone as well as their library card, if they would like help using library services. Librarians will also have a few extra devices on hand if needed.
Please note that librarians cannot fix or repair devices, download or install apps or software other than library service-related applications, conduct virus or troubleshooting scans, perform backup or file management or make security-related recommendations.
For anyone in need of more in-depth assistance, SPL also offers free one-on-one tech tutoring. They will also host several free basic computer classes this spring.
