Summer reading moves into July with music, Minecraft and fire safety

Library News Posted on June 27, 2025

The Stillwater Public Library’s summer reading program heads into July with a children’s performance from Monty Harper, “Live-Action Minecraft” for teens and a field trip to Fire Station One. The library will be closed on Friday, July 4, for Independence Day.

On Tuesday, July 1, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Monty Harper will color the world with music. Harper’s performance is interactive, and children are encouraged to dance and sing along.

Elizabeth Murray, the children’s librarian, enjoys Harper’s performances every summer.

“Monty is a fan favorite and always creates wonderful summer reading-themed songs,” Murray said.

Teens (grades 6-12) will adventure through “Live-Action Minecraft” on Wednesday, July 2, at 2 p.m. at the Stillwater Armory. Inspired by the hit game, this program will feature mini-games for teens of all ages and skill levels. Themed party games include creeper ball, dig for diamonds and a building contest.

Jordan Stine, teen librarian and Minecraft fan, can’t wait to share the games and snacks he has come up with for teens this week.

“Whether you’re a hardcore fan of the series or just getting into Minecraft, everyone will have a chance to play games and have fun,” Stine said. “We’ll also have square snacks and green drinks!”

Stine would also like to remind teens that this week’s program will be at the Stillwater Armory, located at 315 E. 9th Ave, to ensure there’s enough space for all the planned activities. Some games involve mild physical activity, so teens are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing and to bring a refillable water bottle to stay hydrated.

Then on Thursday, July 3, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., families are invited to tour Fire Station One, located at 1506 S. Main Street. Fire Station One is the headquarters of the Stillwater Fire Department. It houses the master mechanic, the fire chief and the fire marshal. Attendees will meet firefighters, see the fire trucks and learn about fire safety. Parking is available behind the fire station. Please do not park in the main driveway as crews may be called away in the event of an emergency.

The library will be closed to the public on July 4, but librarians encourage readers to enjoy the City’s annual Boomer Blast Celebration on Friday, July 4. Learn more about the event at stillwaterok.gov/BoomerBlast. While the library is closed July 4, librarians will be dismantling its temporary library in preparation of reopening the main building on Saturday, July 5. It is still possible that delays with the move could occur. Check for updates at stillwaterok.gov/LibraryConstruction and on the library’s Facebook and Instagram pages at StillwaterOKLib.
