Art abounds for all at this week’s summer reading events

Library News Posted on July 07, 2025

The Stillwater Public Library’s summer reading program features a variety of art-themed events for all ages this week, starting Tuesday, July 8. Programs include an art-inspired science show for children, a landscape painting tutorial in the style of Bob Ross for teens and a family field trip to the OSU Museum of Art. Adults can participate in two programs this week: an artsy StorySLAM and a book craft.

On Tuesday, July 8, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m., Mad Science OKC will blend the magic of science with visual arts to teach elementary-age children about colors. The Tuesday performances will be held at the Stillwater Community Center. The library will also provide sensory calming items, such as weighted blankets, headphones and fidgets for children who may need assistance participating comfortably in larger group settings.

Children’s Librarian Elizabeth Murray notes that science shows are always a big draw for families with kids of all ages.

“I can’t wait to learn something new and then help kids find books to continue their learning adventure,” Murray said.

Art programs will continue on Wednesday, July 11, at 2 p.m., with a Bob Ross-inspired landscape painting program for teens (grades 6-12) at the Community Center.

Teen Librarian Jordan Stine hopes that all teens, regardless of their artistic abilities, will attend.

“The great thing about this method of painting is that it is accessible to all skill levels,” Stine said. “We hope that teens who have even a little interest in painting will learn that great creations can come from anyone, and that mistakes are just ‘happy little accidents.’”

On Thursday, July 10, from 10 a.m. to noon, the library will host a family field trip to the OSU Museum of Art. Summer readers will view the exhibition "Fur, Fangs, Feathers & Fins" and find inspiration to make their own artistic creations. From designing creature prints with bingo daubers to designing animals with curious craft supplies, there will be something for both toddlers and older kids to enjoy. An adult must accompany and supervise all children who attend.

The week will conclude on Saturday, July 12, at 1 p.m., when the library partners with Prairie Arts Center to host a crafting program on making keepsake boxes out of old books. Extra books are available, but participants are also welcome to bring supplies from home.

While registration is not required for youth summer reading events, it is requested for adult programs. Learn more about summer reading at stillwaterok.gov/LibrarySummer. Contact the library with questions by phone at (405) 372-3633 x8106 or via email at askalibrarian@stillwaterok.gov.
