Stillwater Emergency Management Shares Winter Weather Preparations

City of Stillwater News Posted on December 31, 2024

Stillwater Emergency Management (SEMA) is in communications with the National Weather Service in Norman and is continuously monitoring weather forecasts for upcoming conditions. At this time, the approaching cold weather system may include below freezing temperatures with overnight lows in the teens, and windchills even lower. There are uncertainties, how cold the temperatures will be and for how long.

Extreme winter weather includes wind chills that reach sub-freezing temperatures. Prolonged exposure to harsh temperatures can lead to frostbite in minutes.

Now is the time to prepare for dangerous cold temperatures to prevent weather-related emergencies. If people need to go outdoors during winter weather, they need to cover all exposed skin and wear multiple layers. Pets should be brought indoors and out of the harsh temperatures. Also, water pipes in homes and businesses need to be covered and winterized.

Understanding winter-related hazards is key for emergency prevention. Be informed and winter ready!
