(STILLWATER, OK) – On Wednesday, January 31, 2024, Stillwater Police Department (SPD) Special Project Unit and Detectives responded to a call at Home 2 Suites located at 306 E. Hall of Fame, regarding individuals refusing to vacate a room. It was reported, the individuals were in possession of illegal drugs.
Upon arrival, detectives encountered several individuals near a car in the parking lot, where they observed paraphernalia indicative of drug use in plain sight. Further investigation revealed a sophisticated identity theft operation involving the individuals present.
Detectives took swift action that led to the arrest of five individuals: Stephen Kiker, Matthew Wilson, Jason Beeman, Trishann Schmitt, and Lauren Hayes. Initial charges ranged from possession of drug paraphernalia to trafficking illegal drugs. As the investigation progressed it became evident that the group was involved in an extensive identity theft ring.
Key findings from the investigation include:
- Discovery of counterfeit identification documents, blank checks, and personal information of numerous individuals, stored in notebooks and backpacks belonging to the suspects.
- Evidence of fraudulent activities, including attempts to open bank accounts, apply for loans, and make purchases using stolen identities.
- Contact with victims, including those whose identities were stolen and used to obtain loans and merchandise without their consent.
The investigation is ongoing as there is a potential for additional victims.
