The Rolling Thunder Book Bus will make its way to the Stillwater Public Library on Tuesday, August 12, at 10 a.m. Children in Kindergarten through 5th grade are invited to explore the bus and select a book to take home. Space is limited and registration is required.
Presented by American Fidelity Assurance Company, the Rolling Thunder Book Bus is a state-wide outreach program aimed at inspiring children to cultivate a love for reading. The Bus travels to schools, libraries, museums and other community sites, distributing nearly 15,000 books during the 2024-2025 season
The Book Bus is a custom-designed truck and trailer that holds more than 2,000 fiction and nonfiction books. Its exterior features OKC Thunder colors and a built-in television screen that showcases videos. Inside, there are shelves full of books, a locker with players’ autographs, a Thunder jersey, some game-worn basketball shoes and other Thunder gear.
Children’s Librarian Elizabeth Murray is thrilled to host the Rolling Thunder Book Bus at the library for the first time.
“The timing couldn’t be better,” Murray said. “Having the bus in Stillwater so soon after the Thunder’s recent Championship victory adds to the excitement and will hopefully motivate our elementary-aged kids to get excited about reading and start the school year off strong.”
Due to limited space, there will be a limited number of kids able to visit the bus and receive a free book, so registration is required. An adult must accompany children, and families are encouraged to arrive at 10 a.m. to get instructions.
Please note this visit will not include a Thunder player or mascot.
