Library to host Crowns Tea July 19

Library News Posted on July 02, 2025

The Stillwater Public Library, in partnership with Thick Descriptions, will host a Crowns Tea on Saturday, July 19, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Complimentary tea and snacks will be provided as attendees engage in discussions aimed at uniting the community.

Inspired by the book “Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats” by Michael Cunningham and Craig Marberry, this event brings community members together for meaningful conversation, cultural connection and reflection on the stories that shape individuals.

Library Director Stacy DeLano hopes to foster an environment that will bring the Stillwater community together.

“Thick Descriptions is holding Crown Teas in libraries across Oklahoma,” DeLano said. “Suzette Chang, the founder and former Guthrie Public Library director, is a longtime, treasured library colleague. She and her staff have a knack for making conversations on unity accessible and understandable. The Tea will be a lovely opportunity to meet new friends, share cultures and find ways to bring neighbors closer.”

Attendees are encouraged to wear a fancy hat and their “Sunday Best” attire, and to bring a teacup and saucer. Extra hats, teacups and saucers will be available for use at the event on a first-come, first-served basis.

All community members are welcome to attend, but registration is required to ensure there are enough refreshments for everyone. Those interested can sign up online, by phone at (405) 372-3633 x8106 or in person by stopping by the Help Desk.

Thick Descriptions is a non-profit organization that applies anthropological thinking to community challenges. More information can be found at thickdescriptions.org

This program is made possible by Thick Descriptions, Oklahoma Humanities, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Friends of the Stillwater Public Library.
