Stillwater Fire Department Honors Nurses for Life-Saving Actions

(STILLWATER, OK) – Three nurses at Fresenius Kidney Care have garnered well-deserved recognition from the Stillwater Fire Department (SFD) after taking swift and decisive action in the early moments of a patient’s cardiac arrest. The healthcare professionals were awarded a Certificate of Commendation by SFD for their role in saving the patient's life.

When a patient undergoing dialysis on July 20 suddenly experienced a cardiac arrest, Lori Sanders, Edana Stone, and Tracy Simmons took action without hesitation, promptly initiating cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and immediately calling 911.

“Their calm demeanor, extraordinary teamwork, and knowledge of life-saving techniques were critical in providing the patient with the best possible chance of survival,” Fire Chief Terry Essary said.

SFD and LifeNet EMS were dispatched to the facility and upon arrival, found the women skillfully performing CPR, ensuring continuous blood flow and oxygenation to the patient's vital organs. The seamless coordination between the nurses and first responders showcased the partnership between medical professionals and emergency responders.

SFD Medical Officer Steven Marshall expressed his admiration for the nurses.

"In times of medical emergencies, every second counts, and their quick actions undoubtedly saved a life that day,” Marshall said. “Their bravery and expertise in performing CPR were instrumental in stabilizing the patient before our arrival.”

Sanders, Stone and Simmons were awarded their Certificates of Commendation by Marshall and members of the department’s A-shift on July 26 during a ceremony at Fresenius Kidney Care.
