Stillwater Regional Airport Update

(Stillwater, OK) — Stillwater Regional Airport continues to grow and change with construction projects moving forward, new services added and planning underway for a new, larger terminal and new control tower.

The final concrete has been poured for a five-year, $16 million airport apron reconstruction that provides more short-term and long-term parking for aircraft and preserves operational capacity on busy days.

Electrical upgrades for the airfield are nearly complete, including installation of a brighter and more energy-efficient LED beacon.

Former Stillwater Regional Airport Director Gary Johnson has temporarily stepped back into that role while the City of Stillwater launches a nationwide search for a new director.

Johnson served as Stillwater’s airport director for more than 32 years and was instrumental in establishing commercial air service at SWO before he retired in 2018. As Interim Director, Johnson will focus on airport administration, major projects and relations with tenants, American Airlines, the FAA, TSA and other entities.

Airport Construction and Safety Coordinator David Lyons and Security and Compliance Coordinator Caden Young will oversee day-to-day activities in airport operations.

Lyons has been employed by the City of Stillwater for almost 24 years and joined the airport’s operations staff in 2005. He is certified as an Advanced Safety Operations Specialist through the American Association of Airport Executives, graduated from the Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting Academy at Texas A&M University and has 20 years of aircraft rescue and firefighting experience.  Young, a graduate of Oklahoma State University, has earned Airport Security Coordinator and Certified Trusted Agent certifications through the American Association of Airport Executives.
